In 2015, Gearbox Software re-released Homeworld 2 as part of the Homeworld Remastered project. Given that the two games were made by different developers, it is possible that copyright issues were the cause of this. It was also criticised for missing/ignoring a number of additions to gameplay mechanics and the storyline from Cataclysm, which were well received. However, no expansions followed the release of the game and Sierra did little to publicise it, leading to disappointing sales. Patches did fix some of the more prevalent bugs and the game became very popular in the fan modding community, who helped prolong its lifespan. It was criticised for bugs, its inconsistent and very peculiar spikes in difficulty (which made the opening missions the hardest in the game) and its shifting to a more mystical and Maguffin-driven storyline than the previous games. The game's release was delayed until four years after the first game due to Relic working on Impossible Creatures for Microsoft, and then further by disagreements between Relic and Sierra.Īlthough well-received and praised for its lavish graphics, Homeworld 2 did not receive the same level of acclaim as the original game or Cataclysm. Like the first game in the series, it was created by Relic Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment. Homeworld 2 is the third game in the Homeworld series, following on from Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm.
